May be all be reminded to give kindness as humble gifts throughout the day.
GIFT OF KINDNESS
©Betty Luceigh, 2000
What was the first gift of kindness to me?
Was it the touch of a hospital nurse,
my mother’s nipple, or a soft blanket,
the sounds of morning birds outside my baby room window,
the breeze of a summer fan,
or the comfort of a changed diaper?
And how many gifts of kindness have I received since,
hundreds, thousands, mega-millions?
And when, centuries ago or yesterday?
and where, in first grade or my last grocery store?
Perhaps I am asking the wrong questions altogether
and should replace them all with just this one:
what kindness can I give right now?
